Why isn’t the world going to end this year

04Jan12

For some people the argument “it’s bullshit” is simply not a valid one, so here is some scientific proof.

A while ago, I’ve seen on Discovery Channel a Christmas related documentary, about the birth of Christ and what might have actually happened back then. Well, in this documentary, they also specified something really interesting.
You know that we, the human beings, count backwards the years before Christ, and the year of Christ’s birth is considered year zero. It seems that the man who thought of this and started to write a new calendar, simply forgot to count the year zero. He jumped from year -1, to year +1.

But our historians also talk about a year zero; counfusing, huh?

So, if the year he numbered as 1 is actually year 0, it means that year 2012 is actually 2011.

And you really do believe everything you see on Discovery Channel?” you might ask.

If this is not enough for you, a simple click on Wikipedia will bring some light over those theories. According to Wikipedia, Maya civilization never actually disappeared. Their descendants are alive even today and Many Mayan languages continue to be spoken as primary languages.

Still not enough for your overpanicked brain?
Let’s see what NASA has to say about this:
“Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?
A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then — just as your calendar begins again on January 1 — another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.”

So the world isn’t going to end this year just because a ghost of some freaked out mayan showed up in your dream last night and told you so.
